Propagation of three species of Baccharis by cuttings

The cultivation of "carqueja" by establishing an efficient method of plant propagation, is important to obtain high product quality for phytotherapeutic industry. This work was made to study the effect of using different parts of the stems as well as different substrates on propagation of Baccharis articulata, Baccharis trimera and Baccharis stenocephala by cuttings. Cuttings were placed under intermittent mist. The experiments were basal, middle or apical parts of the stems randomly distributed in four repetitions of 15 cuttings each per treatment and also randomly distributed cuttings grown in soil, sand, vermiculite, carbonized rice peels and Plantmax® substrates in four repetitions of 15 cuttings per treatment. There was no difference in terms of rooting percentage, dried rooting weight or number of roots per cutting among the three different parts of the stem in B. trimera, whereas a higher percentage of shooting occurred in the middle and basal cuttings. B. articulata and B. stenocephala middle and apical cuttings presented better results in terms of rooting quantity and rooting development than the basal ones. The parameters tested in the substrates experiment presented no significant difference in the B. trimera propagation while in B. stenocephala and B. articulata propagation the sand was the worst substrate.
