INFLUENCE OF SEEDING DATES IN PLANT DEVELOPMENT, SEED YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF ENDIVE

SUMMARY Endive, cv. Crespa, was seeded in May 25, June 18, July 31 and August 20, in 1987, and in May 06, June 30, July 26 and August 18, in 1988, to determine the influence of seeding dates in plant development, seed yield and quality. It was utilized the block randomized experimental design, with four replications and spacing of 0,60m and 0,20m between rows and plants, respectively. The dates of plant emergence, bolting, flowering and maturity were registered and the rates of germination and vigor were determined. It was also determined the base temperature and the number of day-degrees accumulated in each development stage. The results showed shorter plant cicle and lower plant development and seed yield under long days and high temperatures. The better seeding dates occur in May and June, while seed germination and vigor are not influenced by seeding dates.
