Peritoneal fluid characteristics in normal horses after percutaneous cecal trocharization

Ten male, purebred healthy horses were included in the present study. Clinical parameters as well as biochemical and cellular characteristics in/of the plasma and peritoneal fluid were evaluated over 24 hours (0, 6, 12 and 24h) after cecal trocharization. Microbiological analysis of the peritoneal fluid were also performed at the same time. Body temperature elevation was observed between T6 and T12 and increased cardiac rate (increased) at T6. Total protein, density and alkaline phosphatase activity in the peritoneal fluid increased at T24. Plasma ALT activity and hemoglobin decreased at T6 and T12, respectively. No cellular changes were detected in blood and peritoneal fluid. Microbiological cultures results were negative and no late complications were observed. Considering that the cecal centesis induces temporary systemic and peritoneal changes in normal horses with no adverse effects, it should be considered safe for using in the routine cases, when properly used.
