NUTRITIONAL CAROTENOIDS EFFECTS ON SCOURED WOOL COLOUR (Y-Z) II - POLWARTH HOGGET EWES

SUMMARY Twenty Polwarth hogget ewes were mantained under indoors conditions, receiving diferentiated feeding by a three months period. After it was finished, mid-side wool samples were analysed in yours yolk content and scoured wool colour. The treatments were: Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) + com grain; Elephant grass + sorghum grain; Elephant grass + sorghum grain + cantaxantin pigment and Lucerne hay + sorghum grain that differed in the carotenoids contents: zeaxantin, "zero or control group", cataxantin and lutein, respectively. These diets kept 11% of CP and 65% of TDN. Within the characteristics measured: suint percent, pH colour ad absorbancy, wax percent, brightness and scoured wool colour (Y-Z), no one differed significantly (P> 0.05) among the feeding treatments. Due the small repetition numbers, the results are not conclusives.
