Insufflation of the abdominal cavity is required during laparoscopy to create a safe and effective working space. The most common method involves establishing pneumoperitoneum using carbon dioxide (CO2). This study aimed to evaluate the effects of standard pneumoperitoneum compared with heated and humidified pneumoperitoneum in female cats undergoing laparoscopic ovariectomy, focusing on body temperature, oxidative stress biomarkers, and peritoneal histology. Sixteen female cats were randomly assigned to two groups: the heated and humidified group (HHG), in which pneumoperitoneum was established with heated and humidified CO2, and the standard group (SG), which received cold and dry CO2. Body temperature was measured every 5 min. Samples for oxidative stress biomarkers and peritoneal histology were collected at T0 (immediately after establishing pneumoperitoneum at 8 mmHg) and at T1 (after 50 min of pneumoperitoneum). The oxidative stress biomarkers analyzed included catalase (CAT), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and glutathione transferases (GSTs). Body temperature did not differ significantly between the HHG and SG. Similarly, GSTs and TBARS activity showed no significant differences between groups. However, CAT activity was significantly reduced in the SG compared to HHG at T1 (P = 0.0096). These findings indicate that heated and humidified insufflation gas did not produce markedly superior outcomes compared to standard CO2 in establishing pneumoperitoneum during feline laparoscopic ovariectomy.
