This article discusses some of the results of a recent review of international studies and data on violence against women, and on the health consequences of these forms of violence, in which the perpetrator is normally an intimate male partner. The second part of the article develops questions related to the roots of such violence, including the social construction of gender identity, gender relations, and sexuality, within the dualist tradition which separates mind and body, emphasizes biological elements in sexuality, and defines men and women as radically different. In conclusion, it is argued that current criticisms of the dualistic vision are constructing a new, more integrated vision of both sexuality and human beings.
