Open-access THE GREAT MISFORTUNES OF ISABEL GODIN DES ODONAIS IN THE AMAZON IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY

Abstract

This translation brings to Portuguese the content of the letter about the misfortunes of Mrs Isabel Godin des Odonais when traveling through the Amazon in the first half of the 18th century. The report, written by her husband, gives details about her survival and the parish of all the entourage that traveled with her. It also encompasses observations about places, social behaviors, fauna and flora. In the translation notes, the translators highlight their difficulties and translation positioning facing writings that carry prejudices and an obsolete take on different matters, but that must not be erased or corrected. There is also the goal to highlight the fact that a narrative of a story lived by a woman had to be written and published by a man so that it could be published and respected.
