From pedagogy to linguistics to creolistics: on the figure and work of Adolfo Coelho

Abstract

This contribution aims to highlight the importance of the figure of Adolfo Coelho in the Portuguese context at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It will first emphasise his centrality in the initiation of studies dedicated to creole languages, underlining his role as a precursor. His creolistic production will also be placed in relation with the complex of his interests, with the reflections dedicated to pedagogy and popular culture. Finally, his figure will be read as a bridge between the Portuguese context at the end of the 19th century and the international network of scholars, in which Coelho is fully integrated.
