  • DE O PAIZ DO CARNAVAL PARA IL PAESE DE. CARNEVALE E LE PAYS DU CARNAVAL: OS PARATEXTOS DAS TRADUÇÕES ITALIANA E FRANCESA Artigos

    Bagno, Sandra

Abstract The year 2017 makes us remember the 90 years of the “Ata de Incineração” (Burning Act) which destroyed more than 1600 books of Jorge Amado, and among them 214 copies of O Paiz do Carnaval, a novel whose first translation, which was made into the Italian language, according to the desire of Amado himself, appeared only in 1984, with a “note” by Luciana Stegagno Picchio. Presupposing that, before the publication of the first edition of the novel (1931), the Italian lexicographer Panzini had already rejected, for Italy, the old English nicknames carnival land and land of carnival; this article wants to highlight which interpretations were vehicled, both by the paratext of the Italian translation and by the one of the French translation (1990), written by Alice Raillard. A translator who, however, took advantage of her famous interview Conversando com Jorge Amado, 1990 (Talking with Jorge Amado), which would open new paths to international criticism.
  • A INTERNACIONALIZAÇÃO DE CLARICE LISPECTOR: HISTÓRIA CLARICEANA EM INGLÊS Artigos

Abstract Clarice Lispector’s fictional work has been given attention by foreign readers, scholars and editors since its first translations into French, which appeared in the beginning of the 1950s. The present article aims to present specifically the history of Lispector’s work in the Anglophone literary system – most of her fiction has been translated into the English language, and the recent release of The Complete Stories (2015), edited by her biographer Benjamin Moser, brought even more prestige to the Brazilian author.
  • PIERRE MENARD AS LOGOCENTRIC TRANSLATOR: A REAPPRAISAL OF ROSEMARY ARROJO’S ANALYSIS OF “PIERRE MENARD, AUTOR DEL QUIJOTE” Artigos

    Fernandes, Fabiano

Abstract This article revaluates Brazilian theorist Rosemary Arrojo’s reading of “Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote”, by Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, proposing that her claims might be excessive, and calling into question the extent to which “Pierre Menard” can be read as a piece on translation. The first section briefly sketches deconstruction’s view on language and Arrojos’ own work; the second summarizes Arrojo’s analysis as contained in Oficina de tradução; the third exposes its limitations: its allegorical nature, its drawing upon a problematically amalgamating take on reading, interpretation and translation, the story’s difficult alignment with certain logocentric tenets and internal limitations of logocentrism’s take on language; the final section evaluates the role of George Steiner’s commentary on the short story as formative of the opinion that “Pierre Menard” is about translation.
  • TRANSLATION MODALITIES: AN INVESTIGATION OF THE TRANSLATED SHORT STORY “DEZ DE DEZEMBRO” Artigos

Abstract During the translation process translators adopt linguistic strategies in order to make decisions that help to render a translated text suitable to the target language and culture. The translation modalities proposed by Aubert (105-10) constitute a tool that enables one to identify some of these strategies. In addition, they permit to measure the level of linguistic differentiation between a source text and a target text verifying the distance or the proximity of the target text to the linguistic and cultural issues of the source text. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the translation modalities in the short story “Dez de dezembro” (Saunders 204-38), a translation of the short story “Tenth of December” (Saunders 215-51). For quantifying the translation modalities in the translated text the noun phrases from the source text were selected and their counterparts in the target text were classified and annotated within Notepad++ software. The most recurrent translation modalities in the corpus were Literal Translation and Transposition, categories considered intermediate ones in the rank proposed by Aubert (105-10). Therefore, a relation of equivalence can be established between the target and the source texts.

  • THE RAVEN E O SEU VOO PARA A LÍNGUA BRASILEIRA DE SINAIS Artigos

Abstract Poe’s The raven has received several translations since it was first published in 1845, with many translators having already ventured into trying to understand its plot, which centers around a raven and its simple, albeit cold and terrifying, reply to a lonely bereaved lover, in an effort to transpose it into other languages and cultures. Now this enigmatic bird has come to visit the Brazilian deaf culture. This article discusses some strategies used in my translation of the poem into LIBRAS (Brazilian Sign Language)
  • RELATOS DE VIAGEM E A TRADUÇÃO DE PALAVRAS CULTURALMENTE MARCADAS: UM ESTUDO DE CASO Artigos

Abstract The present article aims at showing the culture-specifc item analysis (AIXELA, 2013) and/or culturemes (SOTO ALMELA, 2014) that appear in travel writing, more specifically, in the work of the controversial French traveller, Charles Expilly, who resided in Rio de Janeiro for two years in the mid 19th century – Le Brésil tel quíl est/O Brasil tal qual ele é. Here we are dealing with a dense book that has been ignored by Brazilian and French historians for many years, and which provides us, thanks to the culture-specifc item, and/or culturemes, with reflections on translation (LAPLANTINE, 1996; FERREIRA, 2013), paying attention to the transformation of the gaze into language, so that on encounutering cultures, on a two way path. We conclude the commented translation, addressing translation strategies used for the culturemes, in our translation into Portuguese (CAMARGO, 2016).
  • INTERDISCIPLINARIDADE NO ENSINO DA TRADUÇÃO: FORMAÇÃO POR COMPETÊNCIAS, ABORDAGEM POR TAREFAS DE TRADUÇÃO, TIPOLOGIA TEXTUAL BASEADA EM CONTEXTO1 Artigos

Vasconcellos, Maria Lúcia; Espindola, Elaine; Gysel, Edelweiss

Abstract In the context of competence-based teaching, this paper draws upon the model of Translation Competence (TC) put forward by the PACTE group (2003) to establish a dialogue between cognitive-constructivist paradigms for translation teaching and the model of the Context-based Text Typology (MATTHIESSEN et al., 2007). In this theoretical environment, it proposes a model for the design of a Teaching Unit (TU) for the development of the bilingual competence in would-be-translators. To this end, it explores translation as a cognitive, communicative and textual activity (HURTADO ALBIR, 2011) and considers its teaching from the translation task-based approach (HURTADO ALBIR, 1999). This approach is illustrated through the practical example of the design of a TU elaborated for the subject ‘Introduction to Specialized Translation’, part of the curricular grid of the program ‘Secretariado Executivo’ at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Aspects such as the establishment of learning objectives and their alignment with the translation tasks composing the TU are addressed for this specific pedagogical situation. We argue for the development of textual competences by means of the acquisition of strategies derived from the Context-based Text Typology to solve problems arising from the translation of different text types and contextual configurations.
  • O DESAFIO DA TRADUÇÃO ENTRE LÍNGUA PORTUGUESA E LIBRAS DIANTE DO FENÔMENO DA SINONÍMIA Artigos

Araújo, Marília do Socorro Oliveira; Carvalho, Márcia Monteiro

Abstract The research is focused on the synonymy phenomenon in translation between the Portuguese language and Brazilian sign language - LI-BRAS, focused on the work of Libras professional interpreter. The objective is to analyze the synonymy in the Portuguese language and LIBRAS as well as verify the semantic value of the sentences translated by LIBRAS interpreters. The theoretical basis is formed by Lyons (1981); Fernandes & Correia (2011); Chomsky (2006) and Saussure (2006), and studies of the Quadros (2004) and Rosa (2008). We use quantitative and qualitative approach. We obtain the translation for analyzes from sentences written in Portuguese and submitted to translations by LIBRAS interpreters of the Abaetetuba city. Concluded that the synonymy, as a constitutive process of translation, is essential to ensure the meaning in the target language. So any semantic loss as verified in the analyzes in translation with the literal meaning and information increase the interpreter translating for LIBRAS synonymic caused damage to the process. Consequently, the LIBRAS interpreter’s work is very important for the deaf and the translation must be carried out with ethics and responsibility. To be a resource to help the understanding of the deaf in a language that he does not hear.
  • A SEMIAUTOTRADUÇÃO. MODALIDADES E VARIANTES Artigos

Abstract In this paper, we expound the concept of semi-self-translation, with which we aim to reflect the great diversity of self-translation in which the translator is offered other people’s collaboration. After analyzing the concept of collaboration with respect to allograph translation and to self-translation, we contend the convenience of not fusing the concepts of allograph translation with author’s collaboration and self-translation with allograph collaboration, the latter being associated with semi-self-translation. In addition, we describe five modalities of semi-self-translation: i) self-translation in collaboration with an allograph translator; ii) self-translation revised by an allograph translator; iii) allograph translation revised by the author; iv) self-translation in collaboration with a relative; and v) allograph translation by a relative or a friend of the author.
