The generativity of the translator’s habitus: Loanwords and foreignisms in the Chinese translation of Sleepwalking Land Yu, Meng Han, Lili Xavier, Lola Geraldes

Abstract in English:

Abstract Translating African literature in Portuguese into other languages began around the 1950s. Following this trend, authors such as the Mozambican Mia Couto have gained many readers and studies worldwide through literary translation. However, Translation Studies on translated works are still in the early stages of development, with fewer contributions compared to literary and linguistic studies on original works. As a contribution to this area, this work develops a study on loanwords and foreignisms in the Chinese translation of Mia Couto’s novel Sleepwalking Land, completed by Jin Xinyi (Couto, 2018). Unlike studies from a linguistic perspective or classical and widely used Translation Studies theories, our study is based on habitus (Bourdieu, 1990; Bourdieu & Wacquant, 1992), a key concept in the sociological approach of Pierre Bourdieu. An interdisciplinary dialogue between translation, literature, and sociology is thus structured. By analyzing the Chinese translation of loanwords and foreignisms in Sleepwalking Land, we seek to describe how the translator’s sociality is reflected. It was confirmed that the translator's habitus can be resignified in two dimensions: historicity and generativity, as well as a set of detailed subcategories. In this way, the translator's habitus is able to liberate some concepts of dualism (e.g. foreignization and domestication, adequacy and acceptability), which emphasize the single pole in translation. On the other hand, it was observed that a translation solution can reflect several of the translator's habitus at the same time.

A century of Brazilian literature translated in China Min, Xuefei

Abstract in English:

Abstract Since the 1920s, Brazilian literature has gradually entered China through translation. It has become an integral part of the country’s modern literary landscape and academic system. There have been many ups and downs over the past century. The historical process of translating and researching Brazilian literature in China can be divided into four stages: the initial period (1920s–1940s), the development period (1950s–1970s), the expansion period (1980s–2000s), and the innovation period (2000–present). Examining the historical context, translation methods, research focus, and notable writers of each period, as well as analyzing the development of knowledge and cultural concerns of different eras, reveals the overall trajectory of transformation. The complex negotiations between cultural workers and changes in political and economic environments during these periods reflect the interaction between literature, translation, and politics. This can provide a reference point and source of inspiration for current and future intercultural literary research.

How well can state-of-the-art machine translation systems render a 16th-century Chinese novel? You, Mu Zhang, Jing Wong, Derek F. Lan, Kaixin

Abstract in English:

Abstract This study evaluates the performance of state-of-the-art machine translation systems in rendering Journey to the West, a culturally rich 16th-century Chinese novel, into Portuguese. Employing a mixed-methods approach, we compare translations produced by DeepSeek-V3, GPT-4o, DeepL Pro, and NovelTrans-J against a published human translation. Quantitative assessments conducted by an expert evaluator examine accuracy, fluency, stylistic elegance, cultural appropriateness, and overall translation quality at both the sentence and chunk levels. The results reveal that three MT systems (DeepSeek-V3, GPT-4o, and NovelTrans-J) produce translations of comparable or superior quality to the human translation. Among them, NovelTrans-J consistently outperforms all other participants, particularly in terms of cultural appropriateness. In contrast, DeepL Pro demonstrates significantly weaker performance across all evaluated dimensions. To complement the quantitative analysis, a qualitative investigation focuses on the rendering of culture-specific items (CSIs). NovelTrans-J exhibits outstanding performance, producing the fewest mistranslations and uniquely providing explanatory notes that facilitate reader comprehension. DeepSeek-V3 and GPT-4o also handle CSIs competently, though with less consistency, while DeepL Pro struggles considerably, showing a high rate of CSI mistranslations and generally low quality. Interestingly, the human translation also contains notable CSI-related errors, particularly in cases involving semantically opaque expressions, an area in which all participants encounter significant difficulty. These findings underscore the growing potential of MT systems to handle complex, culturally rich literary texts, although certain challenges, such as the translation of semantically opaque expressions, remain significant obstacles. We hope this study provides an updated perspective on the current capabilities of MT and offers practical insights to guide the development of future systems that can more accurately capture and transmit the distinctive cultural nuances embedded in literary works.

Large language models in translation quality assessment: The feasibility of human-AI collaboration Wang, Chengxu

Abstract in English:

Abstract This research explores the potential application of Large Language Models (LLMs) in translation quality assessment within the Chinese Academic Translation Project (CATP), from a human-AI collaboration perspective. The study integrates the LISA QA Model and the Chinese standard GB/T 19682-2005 to develop a multidimensional translation quality assessment system, including typologies and weights of errors specific to Chinese academic works. Using this system, three LLMs (GPT-4, Claude-3.7, and Deepseek-R1) were employed to evaluate the Portuguese version of the work Introduction to Qing Dynasty Academic Thought, analyzing their performance and comparing it with the results of an assessment conducted by human experts, with the aim of exploring the feasibility of a collaborative model between humans and AI. Based on the experimental results, the research proposes a hierarchical assessment process of “AI screening-refined human judgment” and an inter-linguistic assessment mechanism of “Chinese prompt-multilingual verification”, constructing a translation quality assessment framework based on human-AI collaboration for the CATP. This study infuses elements of technological innovation into traditional translation quality assessment, providing a new technical support pathway for the strategy of “internationalization” of Chinese academic knowledge.

Textual shifts and equivalence between poetic systems: The Cancioneiros and the Classic of Poems compared Sinedino, Giorgio

Abstract in Portuguese:

Resumo A tradução literária português-chinês deve investigar critérios de “equivalência poético-cultural” entre os respectivos sistemas literários. Com base em estudos de caso, ilustra-se como ela pode ser instrumentalizada enquanto estratégia/modelo de tradução. Ao assumir o texto como unidade de tradução, é possível trasladar o “Literário” (as características que definem uma obra como literatura em seu próprio sistema) mediante textual shifts. Este argumento é desenvolvido em quatro seções. A introdução apresenta o problema e as premissas básicas do estudo.

Abstract in English:

Abstract Portuguese-Chinese literary translation should inquire into the criteria of “poetic-cultural equivalence” between their literary systems. Based on a set of case-studies, this paper demonstrates how such equivalence can be converted into translation strategies/models. If the text is taken as translation unit, it is possible to transfer its “Literariness” (the features that define it as a literature in its own system) through textual shifts. This argument is developed in four sections. The introduction presents the problem and its basic presuppositions. The second section maintains that a strictly linguistic understanding of translational phenomena is not enough to deal with the “Literariness”. A “textual level” (supralinguistic) is added to Catford’s theory of translation. We claim that cultural and poetic differences orient “dislocations” regarding the composition and performance of translated poems (textual shifts). The third section applies the concept of “poetic-cultural equivalence” to Portuguese and Chinese language poetics. Medieval Iberian Peninsula and Ancient China share comparable socioeconomic and institutional features, so that there are analogies in terms of what writing poems means, as well as their social functions. The last section applies the concept of “poetic-cultural equivalence” to a comparative study of texts selected from the Cancioneiros and the Classic of Poems. They are comparable in three levels: content, form and theory. We conclude that it is possible to use equivalent texts as references or models to literary translation performed through textual shifts, thereby making their literary systems converge mutually.

Between calculated betrayals and creative freedoms: The subtitling of Elite Squad 2 in China on Youku and Bilibili Huang, Ting

Abstract in English:

Abstract This article presents a comparative analysis of the Chinese subtitles of Tropa de Elite 2 (Elite Squad 2), as released on the platforms Youku and Bilibili, focusing on the cultural, political, and linguistic implications of audiovisual translation in distinct mediation environments. Drawing on the analytical models of Pedersen (2011) and Gambier (2019), the study examines a bilingual corpus comprising two versions of the film: an indirect translation via English (Youku, 2012) and a direct translation from Portuguese (Bilibili, 2022). The analysis identifies recurring patterns of omission, generalization, and domestication of extralinguistic cultural references, swear words, and pragmatically marked expressions, revealing the impact of institutional censorship practices and platform-specific logic. Results indicate that while the Youku version tends to soften or erase oral and cultural features of the original, the Bilibili version shows greater expressive freedom and creativity, particularly due to its younger, more participatory user base. This study contributes to our understanding of audiovisual translation as a context-sensitive act of discursive mediation, shaped by intersecting layers of ideological, institutional, and algorithmic constraints in the global streaming era.

Mediating Chinese Yi minority culture: The indirect translation of Jidi Majia’s poetry into Portuguese Li, Li

Abstract in English:

Abstract The poetry of Jidi Majia celebrates the traditions of the Yi minority in China, especially the Nuosu tribe, or Black Yi. His works have attracted global recognition, thanks to their translation into over 40 languages, including English, Spanish, Irish, Greek and Scots. In 2019, a Portuguese version of Jidi’s poetry was produced by José Luís Peixoto, as part of a project jointly promoted by the National Press and Publication Administration of China and corresponding Portuguese cultural agencies. Given the relative scarcity of literary translators who are proficient in Mandarin and well-versed in the culture of Chinese ethnic minorities, the translation of Jidi Majia’s poetry into other languages usually relies on “indirect translation”, often using English as an “intermediate language.” For his Portuguese renditions, Peixoto used English, French, and Spanish as intermediate languages and solicited the collaboration of a Portuguese-speaking Chinese scholar, Cláudia You, to check his translations. The published version of Jidi Majia’s poetry in Portuguese is, therefore, the result of multiple layers of interpretation, rewriting, cross-checking and redrafting. As with all examples of indirect and collaborative translation, the process raises questions about responsibility and the relative authority of the contributing actors and intermediate texts. This article explores these questions, drawing not only on the Chinese source text, the English intermediate text and the Portuguese target text, but also on paratexts, including the introduction to the Portuguese edition, the email correspondence between José Luís Peixoto and Cláudia You, Cláudia You’s notes on Peixoto’s draft translations, and an interview with her about her experience as a collaborator. From this case study, the author of the present paper seeks to identify the boundaries and roles that must be negotiated in cases of collaborative and indirect translation, particularly when the outcome is to represent an ethnic minority for a cosmopolitan readership.

Chinese-Portuguese legal bilingualism in Macao: AI-powered corpus analysis and alignment Miroir, Jean-Claude

Abstract in English:

Abstract This article explores legal bilingualism in Macao, a Special Administrative Region of China that adopts the “one country, two systems” principle. The analysis focuses on the coexistence of Chinese and Portuguese in local legislation, highlighting linguistic hierarchy and legal translation challenges. Based on a robust methodology, the study compiles and annotates parallel corpora of legal texts in Portuguese and Chinese, employing advanced artificial intelligence tools such as Bertalign for automated alignment and spaCy for linguistic annotations. Due to the distinct writing systems between the languages, alignment required AI-based solutions to overcome limitations of conventional aligners developed for Romance languages. The analysis highlights the significant influence of Portuguese on Chinese legal terminology, with a high prevalence of linguistic calques. The study also addresses the challenges of Chinese language tokenization and machine translation, proposing practical solutions and comparing the performance of different translation tools, such as LLMs (language models) and NMTs (neural machine translation systems). The detailed exploration of the corpora, including n-gram analyses and syntactic patterns, offers valuable insights for corpus linguistics and legal translation. The computational tools of Sketch Engine enable, through practical examples extracted from this aligned corpus, the study of specific aspects of Macanese legal translation. The article contributes significantly to the field of corpus linguistics, especially in multilingual legal contexts, and offers valuable methodological and analytical resources for researchers and legal translation professionals.

The reception of Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past among Portuguese-speaking readers: A corpus-based study Zhang, Xiang Huang, Xin

Abstract in English:

Abstract Remembrance of Earth’s Past, Liu Cixin’s trilogy beginning with The Three-Body Problem, has gained global recognition for its ambitious scientific vision and philosophical depth, redefining contemporary science fiction. While its reception has been explored in several linguistic and cultural contexts—including English-, Japanese-, and Spanish-speaking readerships—Portuguese-language contexts remain underrepresented in scholarship. This study addresses this gap by examining Portuguese-speaking readers’ engagement with the trilogy, seeking to understand its popularity, interpretative trends, and the thematic and linguistic patterns shaping responses. Additionally, it assesses the interplay between positive reception and critical perspectives. Grounded in Reception Theory, particularly the perspectives of Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser, the analysis investigates how readers’ expectations, interpretive strategies, and cultural frameworks shape their understanding of the work. Methodologically, it crawls the data and analyzes the Portuguese-language reviews from three major platforms—Amazon.br, Goodreads, and Skoob—spanning the period from April 2014 to March 2025. The reviews were compiled into the reader corpus and compared against the Portuguese reference corpus using Sketch Engine, a computational linguistics tool. The study employs keyword analysis to identify distinctive themes and linguistic patterns within the Portuguese comments. The findings indicate a strong and predominantly positive reception of Remembrance of Earth’s Past across Portuguese-speaking regions. Four interrelated thematic dimensions emerge from high-frequency word analysis: recognition of Liu Cixin’s authorship, engagement with scientific speculation, character complexity, and reflections on cultural paradigms. The reception of the trilogy reveals an ongoing negotiation between readers’ established literary expectations and the novel’s unique cultural-scientific framework. Through selective accommodation and cultural analogy, readers navigate potential comprehension gaps, adapting the text to their interpretative contexts. This study contributes to translation and reception studies by offering insights into the cross-cultural dynamics of literary engagement.

Power relations and deforming tendencies in the Portuguese edition of the novella Se, Jie by Eileen Chang Matiusso, Cesar Augusto Miranda Jubran, Safa Alferd Abou Chahla

Abstract in English:

Abstract The novella Lust, Caution (Se, Jie; 色, 戒), by Eileen Chang, was written in the 1950s and underwent decades of revision by the author before being published for the first time in the late 1970s. It only reached a broad audience in 2007, when its film adaptation won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, reigniting interest in the work, which has since been translated into at least ten other languages — including Portuguese, through an indirect translation. The interdisciplinary approaches of Translation Studies are a valuable tool for understanding this context, especially since the cultural turn in this field highlights power relations and the circumstances surrounding textual production. While Berman (2013) describes the deforming tendencies present in ethnocentric translations, Venuti (2008) and Tymoczko and Gentzler (2002) shed light on extratextual aspects and point out that comparing different translations and analyzing the techniques employed allows us to determine the literary — and also political — purposes of their translators. Based on the analysis of different translations of Se, Jie, this study aims to: (1) identify the occurrence of deforming tendencies (Berman, 2013) in the intermediate English translation and determine its influence in the indirect Portuguese translation; (2) compare selected excerpts with their counterparts in direct translations into other languages; and (3) using an intercultural approach (Bassnett & Lefevere, 1998; Tymoczko & Gentzler, 2002; Venuti, 2008; Wang, 2004), provide hypotheses for these translational approaches through the lens of power dynamics and intercultural interactions.

Translation and diplomacy: An intercultural analysis of the letter from Qianlong emperor to King Joseph I Chunhui,

Abstract in English:

Abstract Situated within the historical context of Sino-Portuguese relations, this study focuses on the last Portuguese embassy to China: the mission of Francisco Xavier de Assis Pacheco e Sampaio, with particular attention to the Chinese-Portuguese translation of the letter of credence sent by Emperor Qianlong to King Joseph I in 1753. The analysis is grounded in Anthony Pym’s theory of interculture. Known as the Grande Rolo Amarelo, the letter contains three parallel versions — in Manchu, Chinese, and Portuguese. The Portuguese version is a translation of the Chinese text, produced by Avguštin Hallerstein, a Jesuit missionary serving at the Qing Court. The Chinese version is marked by haughtiness and superiority, typical of the official discourse shaped by the ideology of Chinese centrality and the prevailing Tributary System. A comparative textual analysis of the original and the translation reveals that the translator, aware of the cultural and ideological tensions, adopted strategies to soften the explicit hierarchical tone. As a result, the Portuguese version reconstructs a relationship of diplomatic equality and balance between the two nations, contributing to the success of the embassy and the preservation of the dignity of the Portuguese Court. These interventions highlight the translator’s crucial role as an intercultural mediator, capable of reconciling and harmonizing distinct perspectives and interests.

For a literalness applicable to the translation of classical Chinese poetry Portugal, Ricardo Primo

Abstract in English:

Abstract This article discusses criteria for the literary translation of classical Chinese poetry into Portuguese and phonetic languages, noting the frequent insufficiency of the available translations in relation to the opulence of semiotic resources of the originals. Based on Wai-lim Yip’s concept of mode of apprehension and representation, and on theoretical assessments by Antoine Berman (translation of the letter) and Haroldo de Campos (translation of the sign), the need for a proposal of literalness applicable to the translation of Chinese poetry is asserted. Walter Benjamin’s theory on the evolution of the arts and the representation in cinema is applied to Wai-lim Yip’s analysis of cinematism in Chinese poetic writing, also resorting to François Cheng’s considerations. The article concludes by affirming, based on Benjamin and Yip, the importance of a work oriented by the syntax of the Chinese poem in translation for a literalness that recovers the expressive resources of the original, or its mode of apprehension and representation.

Between mirrors, parallaxes and unexpected affinities: (Re)visiting the translation of Chinese and Brazilian poetry Jatobá, Júlio Reis

Abstract in English:

Abstract In this article, we will examine theories and theorists, translations and translators of Chinese poetry into Portuguese who, throughout the relations and contacts between China and Portuguese-speaking cultures, have forged a poetics of translation that is an alternative to Western and Westernizing theories that currently support the discourse that advocates the need for new spaces—academic and non-academic—to discuss, propose and theorize non-European poetics in translation and poetics of translating to, in and for China. To this end, we will review theories and theorists of literary translation from both China and Brazil through translation and a discussion about the expansion of the world literary canon. This review will be the guiding thread that will provide us with the framework to reflect on how these highly varied geographical, temporal, and culturally located spaces contribute to engendering alternative ways of thinking world literature. To support our proposition, we will revisit theories, poets, translations and translators of Chinese and Brazilian poetry in order to defend our proposition of inserting theories and practices for poetic translation from the perspective of exchanges between two linguistically and culturally distant, different worlds, but which complement each other in a kind of parallax.
