A study of abstracts in anthropology: the heterogeneity within the field(s)

ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the genre research article abstract across Anthropology. Twenty-four abstracts were selected from two Anthropological journals. The corpus was analyzed based on Gil’s model (2011GIL, Beatriz. 2011. Comparação entre resumos e seus respectivos abstracts publicados em revistas brasileiras sobre Tradução. Relatório de Iniciação Científica. São José do Rio Preto: Fapesp.) and the concepts of hedges and boosters from Hyland (1998HYLAND, Ken. 1998. Boosting, hedging and the negotiation of academic knowledge. Text-Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of the Discourse. 18(3): 349-382., 2002______. 2002. Directives: Argument and Engagement in Academic Writing. Applied Linguistics. 23(2): 215-239., 2011______. 2011. Disciplines and Discourse: Social Interactions in Construction of Knowledge. In: STARKE-MYERRING, Doreen, et al (Ed.) Writing in knowledge societies. Perspectives on Writings. Fort Collins, Colorado: The WAC Clearinghouse and Parlor Press: 193-214.). The results indicate that the journals occupy different boarders within the subject. JHE is aimed at hard and quantitative researches, whereas CA is focused on interpretative and qualitative researches. These differences shape the materialization of the abstracts, supporting the claim that the boarders influence directly in the constitution of the academic genres, corroborating Bazerman’s notion of tipification (2006BAZERMAN, Charles. 2006. Gênero, agência e escrita. In: HOFFNAGEL, Judith C.; DIONISIO, Angela Paiva (Trad./Org.). São Paulo: Cortez., 2009______. 2009. Gêneros textuais: tipificação e interação. 3. ed. São Paulo: Cortez.).
