Repairs in reading aloud as clues of sociolinguistic awareness

ABSTRACT

Indirect clues of linguistic processing can contribute to the measurement of sociolinguistic awareness of a variable phenomenon, such as repairs in a situation of reading aloud, in a socially monitored situation, such as at university. Based on this premise, a study was carried by the control of the conservation rate of the segment in five variable phonological processes of Brazilian Portuguese and the rate of repair in case of non-performance, in the reading aloud of a text by 50 undergraduate students. The results point to differences between the processes related to the type of constraining for the conservation of the segment (morpheme and nonmorpheme value) and the difference in rate between the non-realization and the repair, which are taken as clues to the sociolinguistic salience.
