Guided by the principles of comparative linguistics, the objective of this study is to demonstrate the gramatical versatility of 'ça' as frequently used in contemporary French language. The French pronoun 'ça' is analysed in terms of its deictic function in Portugese from Brazil. The principal characteristics of this element are elaborated in the introduction. Our interest in the subject of deictics is motivated in part, by the role of 'ça', as distinguished by near/far, and by the basic divergence between the organization of physical space in French and in Portugese, the former which makes use of a binary system, and the latter a ternary system.
