Compara-se neste artigo um conjunto de fatos relacionados a interface sintaxe/morfologia em quatro línguas indígenas brasileiras, a saber, Kuikuro, Guarani, Karaja e Tikuna. Investiga-se o papel das categorias funcionais na derivação da estrutura básica da oração nessas línguas. Discutem-se os problemas que se colocam para a linearização da ordem SOV, propondo-se análises alternativas.

This paper compares a set of interrelated phenomena concerning the syntax/morphology interface in four brazilian indigenous languages: Kuikúro, Guarani, Karajá and Tikuna. The role of functional categories and the general structure of the clause are investigated in the languages. Problems for the SOV linearization are discussed and alternative analyses are proposed.

Este trabalho argumenta que o princípio Procrastinar de Chomsky (1993) distoa das linhas gerais do Programa Minimalista e propõe uma análise alternativa para a preferência de movimento coberto a movimento aberto e de inserção lexical a movimento. Essa proposta também dá conta da ordem de aplicação de certas operações relacionadas a apagamento de vestígios.

This paper argues that Chomsky's (1993) Procrastinate principle is not in consonance with the general guidelines of the Minimalist Program and proposes an alternative account of the preference for covert movement instead of overt movement and the preference for lexical insertion instead of movement. This proposal also accounts for the order of application of certain operations related to deletion of traces.

Esse artigo analisa o fenômeno da concordância negativa de acordo com a teoria da checagem do Programa Minimalista (Chomsky, 1995). Comparando os dados do português brasileiro com os de outras línguas, fomos levados a considerar fatos de natureza diacrônica que foram descritos através da noção de gramaticalização (Hopper & Traugott, 1993). Finalmente, fizemos a hipótese de que as etapas de mudança lingüística previstas por essa noção são "visíveis" para o sistema computacional.

This paper proposes an analysis of the negative agreement phenomenon assuming the checking theory of the Minimalist Program (Chomsky, 1995). After comparing Brazilian Portuguese with other languages, it was necessary to consider some diachronic facts described through the notion of grammaticalization (Hopper & Traugott, 1993). Finally, we claim that the stages of linguistic change presupposed by this notion are "visible" to the computational system.

Nas pesquisas funcionalistas mais recentes nota-se uma orientação cada vez mais acentuada para a investigação histórica dos fatos lingüísticos, associada à descrição sincrônica. A interação/interdependência sincronia/diacronia é fundamental na compreensão do processo de gramaticalização. Além do exame sincrônico das formas gramaticais como um fenômeno discursivo-pragmático, primariamente sintático, cabe também investigar a origem dessas formas no discurso e as trajetórias de mudança por que passam. Estudos sobre a trajetória e configuração atual de itens como `onde' e `ir', ou de processos como integração sintática por encaixamento, ou de processos como repetição e negação, atestam as vantagens dessa interação, que resulta na abordagem pancrônica.

In the more recent functionalist researches one can notice a strong tendency toward the historical investigation of linguistic facts, together with synchronic descriptions. The interaction and interdependence synchrony/ diachrony is central to the understanding of the process of grammaticalization since, besides the synchronic analysis of grammatical forms as a discourse-pragmatic phenomenon, primarily syntactic, one should also investigate the origin of these forms in discourse and the paths of change along which they proceed. Studies on the trajectory and current configuration of items such as `onde' and `ir', of processes such as syntactic integration by embedding or of processes such as repetition and negation, give evidence of this interaction, which results in the panchronic approach.

Este trabalho mostra que o português tem três tipos de formação de particípio passado, que compartilham a presença da seqüência [Vacentuada + C + V] e diferem a respeito de sua localização dentro da palavra: (A) [[...]Radical + [Vacentuada+ C + V]], para todas as conjugações, (B) [[...Vacentuada... + C]Radical + V], para 1ª conjugação, e (C) [[...Vacentuada...]Radical + C + V], para 2ª e 3ª conjugações. A proposta específica do trabalho é que há uma estrutura abstrata de traços formais subjacente tanto à forma morfofonológica quanto à interpretação semântica gramatical: aquelas formações resultam de a interpretação de particípio ser satisfeita nessas três localizações. Essa análise é uma extensão da proposta de Chomsky (1995) sobre traços formais.

This paper shows that Portuguese has three types of past participle formations, which share the presence of the string [stressedV + C + V] and differ with respect to its location within the word: (A) [[...]Root + [stressedV + C + V]], for all conjugations, (B) [[...stressedV...+ C]Root + V], for 1st conjugation, and (C) [[...stressed V...]Root + C + V], for 2nd and 3rd conjugations. The specific proposal of the paper is that there is an abstract structure of formal features underlying both the morphophonological form and grammatical semantic interpretation: those formations result from the participial interpretation being met at these three locations. This analysis is an extension of Chomsky's (1995) proposal about formal features.

A partir da afirmação de Pêcheux (1990) de que não há metalinguagem, na medida em que toda descrição está exposta ao equívoco da língua (da ordem do simbólico); de que há o outro na sociedade e na história e por isso há um real estranho à univocidade lógica, buscamos trabalhar a noção de metalinguagem referida ao uso dos tesauros (sistema de símbolos, indicadores de função, descritores) utilizados pelos indexadores para a representação dos artigos nas bases de dados informatizadas. Nosso corpus é composto por resumos de artigos e descritores das bases de dados bibliográficas LILACS (Literatura Latino-americana em Ciências da Saúde) e SOCIOFILE (Sociological Abstracts). Buscamos explicitar os efeitos da subjetividade no funcionamento da indexação, levando em conta os espaços de interpretação que dão lugar ao deslocamento dos sentidos.

The main objective of this work is to discuss the notion of metalanguage concerning the use of thesaurus (symbols systems, functions indicators, descriptors) utilized by indexers for article representation in computerized bibliographical databases. Our corpus comprises article abstracts and bibliographical database descriptors LILACS (Literatura Latino-Americana em Ciências da Saúde) and SOCIOFILE Sociological Abstracts. We aim at clarifying the effects of subjectivity in the functioning of indexing taking account the grounds for interpretation that allow different meanings.

A retrospectiva lançará luz sobre as relações entre a Lingüística e a Arqueologia, chamando atenção para a História da Arqueologia e a influência dos modelos lingüísticos para o desenvolvimento dos esquemas interpretativos da Arqueologia. Será feita referência a teóricos histórico-culturais, como Gordon Childe, a arqueólogos processuais influenciados pelo Estruturalismo e à análise de discurso pós-processual. O artigo concluirá ressaltando a importância da Lingüística para o pensamento arqueológico.

This retrospective paper will shed light on the relations between Linguistics and Archaeology by drawing special attention to the history of Archaeology and the influence of Linguistic models for the development of archaeological interpretive frameworks. Reference will be made to culture history theoreticians, like Gordon Childe, to processual archaeologists influenced by Structuralism and to post-processual discourse analysis. The paper will conclude stressing the importance of Linguistics to archaeological thought.

Este trabalho analisa o desenvolvimento de uma das teorias recentes do discurso: a Semiótica francesa. Mostra os princípios sobre os quais se constituiu, sua marcha no estabelecimento do percurso gerativo de sentido, os caminhos de complexificação do nível narrativo, com o estudo das modalizações do fazer e do ser, passando da constituição de uma teoria da dimensão pragmática da narrativa para a de suas dimensões cognitiva e patêmica. Em seguida, examina os caminhos atuais da investigação, em que se busca estudar um aquém e um além do percurso. Naquele, com os conceitos de estesia, aspectualização e modulação, investiga-se a recuperação no discurso do contínuo das pré-condições de significação; neste, examina-se o problema da relação entre plano do conteúdo e plano da expressão.

This work analyses the development of a recent discourse theory, namely French Semiotics. It refers to the principles that form the basis of that theory, its progress regarding the establishment of a meaning generative process, the course it has followed towards the complexification of the narrative level through a study of the modalizations of doing and being, ranging from the building up of theory concerned with the pragmatic dimension of the narrative to a theory focused on the cognitive and pathematic dimensions of the narrative. Furthermore, this work examines current paths of investigation which seek to analyse not only what underlies but also what goes on beyond discourse. In the first case, by means of the concepts of aesthesis, aspectualization and modulation, the recovering of the signification pre-conditions continuum in discourse is investigated; in the second case the problem of the relationship between the level of content and level of expression is examined.
