The trivialization of the term sustainability has caused a great amnesia about its origins, which obscured the historical sense of its legitimacy as a new value. The memory proposed in this paper on the circumstances that led to the emergence of the preceding expression "sustainable development" indicates that overcoming the problem depends on the advances of science and the humanities on two crucial issues: cooperation and global governance.
