abstract
From the discussion on the finiteness of resources, which is the basis cities to function, and on climate change, the concept of sustainability emerges as a way to debate the importance of preserving natural resources for this and future generations, according to the Brundtland Report. In addition to the perspective of sustainability, the availability and popularization of technologies from the beginning of the century intensified their use, not only for human communication, but also as a solution to the complex problems of daily life in cities and their governance. Each city’s governance needs to be prepared for these dynamic challenges, which involve further studies, planning and possible adjustments to existing policies, systems and services to address the preservation of ecosystems and human needs.
