Comidas da horta e do mato: plantas alimentícias em quintais urbanos no Vale do Paraíba

ABSTRACT

In the cities of Areias and São José do Barreiro (the region of the Paraíba river valley) agriculture is practiced in urban vegetable gardens, surrounded by knowledge about cultivation, collection and consumption of various plants deemed non-conventional for the large market. The research that identified this aimed to characterize urban agriculture in home vegetable gardens, conduct an inventory of known agrobiodiversity with emphasis on non-conventional edible plants (PANC), and demonstrate their importance in preserving knowledge about the use of species. Fifty-nine residents were interviewed, and 172 species and food varieties were found, of which 35 are considered non-conventional. Agriculture in urban home gardens has significant importance in preserving knowledge about available agrobiodiversity, including spontaneous and cultivated non-conventional food species. Home vegetable gardens are important spaces for the perpetuation of this knowledge, the preservation of which a sine qua non condition.
