Swine waste water treatment in horizontal anaerobic reactor followed by aerobic sequencing batch reactor

An anaerobic-aerobic combined system was evaluated to treat swine wastewater with an average total suspended solids (TSS) concentration of 18,624 to 11,395 mg L-1. The anaerobic treatment system was constituted by four horizontal reactors each one having a total volume of 49.5 L, one with sludge blanket (HASBR) and tree with fixed film (HAFFR) installed in series, followed by an aerobic sequential batch reactor (SBR) with continue feeding, with total volume of 339 L. In the HAFFR was used as support to fix the film bamboo and plastic rings, and wad (Luffa cillyndrica). The hydraulic detention time (HDT) and the volumetric organic load (VOL) applied in HASBR were respectively 12 and 10 h, and 52.6 and 60.9 g COD (L d)-1. The SBR was operated in a 24 hours operational cycle with VOL of 0.34 and 0.50 g COD (L d)-1. The average of total COD and TSS removed in horizontal anaerobic reactors set were of 96 to 99% and of 96 to 95%, respectively. The higher methane production happened in HAFFR with values up to 0.744 m³ CH4 (m³ reactor d)-1. With the SBR inclusion improved the effluent quality and the stability of treatment system and COD and TSS removal increased to 99 and 99%, and to 98 and 99%, respectively. In the SBR occurred nitrification and denitrification, with ammoniacal-N removal up to 65%.
