This is a descriptive and exploratory study. The study aimed to describe the perceptions of nursing professionals regarding the participation of doulas assisting women in labor. A qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews was utilized for this study. Subjects included 11 nurse assistants and 5 nurses from an Obstetric Center's public maternity ward in the city of Salvador in the state of Bahia. The results illustrated three categories: from idea to the reality of the initiative "doulas in the delivery room;" benefits with their inclusion; and difficulties with their presence. It is clear that this initiative aims to fulfill the gap of a companion at the obstetric center of the institution. Among the benefits found, it is relevant to note the replacement of a family member as well as the physical comfort given to the woman in labor. The difficulties of having a doula are concerned with their undefined role and the lack of clarity of their work limits. The interviewees recognize the importance of the work by doulas; however, they highlight problems due to the manner of their insertion in the service.
