The study sets out to discuss the relationship between family health care professionals and the elderly. It was carried out on the basis of a qualitative approach, where data was collected using the focus group technique, and followed by content analysis. It was verified that in the health professional relationship with the elderly, communication takes place for commitment and humanity, which brings the benefits and influence on the change of the elderly behavior, however, the actions are inspired in the biomedical models and traditional health education. The results indicate that the achievement for positive results in primary care is a challenge for the relationship between health professionals and the elderly. The results would also indicate that administrators must be aware of the need for the professional qualification of personnel so that health care is improved in order to promote a fairer and egalitarian society. And this demands going beyond the traditional care model.
