Presentation

The text "the moral formation of the nursing student", from Waleska Passion, then president of the Brazilian Association of Diplomee Nurses - ABED and Director of the School of Nursing Ana Néri of the University of Brazil, consists in a lecture pronounced in the V National Congress of Nursing. The event was become fulfilled in the Federal District, in November of 1951, as part of the thematic: Relative problems to the Schools of Nursing. The author invited for a reflection concerning the problems in the formation of the nurses, focusing intrinsic and extrinsically questions to the nursing, as the quality and amount of formed nurses, so that she could contribute for the solution of the problems of health of the time. Face to the sparing available human resources in the hospitals, emphasized that the reduced number of nurses provoked a distance of the direct care to the sick person. It alerted, also, for the proliferation of nursing schools functioning in precarious conditions. It called the attention for the attachment to the traditions, exemplifying the existence of the system of boarding school in the schools of nursing, inheritance of the Nightingale model, with the objective alleged one to facilitate to the young students the incorporation of the values of the profession. However, with expectation of increase of the number of pupils and the difficulties of maintenance of the residence, more was not justified the obligator character of the boarding school. Waleska Passion makes critical to the requirement of integral presence in period of training field, suggesting a flexibility, what it calls "measured joust". The professor-learning relation stands out that, in some points, the authority makes it difficult the progress and curtails the freedom of the young, making it difficult. It criticizes, still, the excesses of the technique and science, overshadowing the human and social value of the work and the perception of the patient as human being. In a school, where if it gives the true notion of freedom
