CONSIDERATIONS ON THE ROLE OF CULTURAL CAPITAL AND ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION: NA INVESTIGATION USING DATA FROM THE STATE OF MINAS GERAIS

Access to higher education in Brazil has expanded. However, the literature indicates the persistence of patterns of regional and socioeconomic inequality in access to higher education levels. The article analyzes the determinants of access to higher education in Minas Gerais, in 2009, from theoretical perspectives that emphasize the role of Family Resources - synthesized in terms of economic, cultural and social capital - in this process. The approach of the paper focuses on the influence of Individual Cultural Capital - the cultural habits of individuals on entry into higher education. It uses data from the "Pesquisa de Amostra de Domicílios" of Minas Gerais (PAD / MG) / 2009, sample survey conducted by João Pinheiro Foundation, to test the explanatory power of the cultural practices of young people about access to higher education.
