Abstract
The letters of enfranchisement used to exhibit name, age, color and birthplace of freed people. They also could bring information about the marital status, parentage, occupation and financial value of the slaves. These data and its quantitative analysis allow us to draw the emancipated population profile of Mariana (a subsistence economy area) in order to verify the changes on freed characteristics from 1840 to 1888 and to realize the transformations on the practices of granting freedom, regarding the abolitionist laws period.
