Open-access Assessment of school feeding: a case study in the state Education network of Corumbá-MS

Abstract

This descriptive and quantitative-qualitative study sought to evaluate the school meals offered to 453 students at state schools in Corumbá, MS. Specifically, it was possible to identify the student’s profiles (the majority are women and brown) and gather data and evidence on food security within the school. The results show that the right to school meals of nutritional quality has not been operationalized in schools in the state of Corumbá–MS, as evidenced by the low availability of hot food and the a large dominance of ultra-processed foods in lunch. Only improvements in academic results will occur with the introduction of quality food and nutrition Education. Therefore, the use of evidence in the evaluation of public policies aims to make everyday activities and social practices visible to ensure better resource management and effectiveness in fulfilling the policy objective, in this case, the National School Meal Program.
