A longitudinal analysis of Ideb in medium-sized cities in the State of São Paulo

Abstract

This study makes a longitudinal analysis of the basic education development index (Ideb) for the initial years of the elementary school in 49 medium-sized cities in the State of São Paulo. It takes into account the average performance over the years, the rate of average growth from one Ideb edition to another and the achievement of goals for each edition. The multivariate statistical technique of principal component analysis (PCA) was used to analyze the original data matrix from 49 municipalities for 7 editions of the Ideb calculation. According to the three aspects analyzed, it was possible to establish the cities that stood out the most. In addition, two results caught our attention: the importance of the year 2013, relative to the others, to explain the variance of the original data and the existence of a plateau from 2017 to 2019 in the Ideb of the 49 cities.
