Abstract
In the light of the theoretical contributions of Robert Merton, the father of the sociology of science, the extrinsic influence on scientific research in the field of Education is discussed, specifically the requirement for research projects under the CNPq Research Productivity Fellowship Programme to adhere to priority technology areas during the three-year period from 2021 to 2023. Qualitative, bibliographical, and documentary research was carried out that involved reflections on the author’s experiences. Considering the suspension of the aforementioned requirement, this study highlights, among other conclusions, the consensus on the importance and necessity of government funding for the advancement of knowledge in the frontier areas between Education and technology.
