Amperometric determination of iodide in expectorant oral solution by flow injection analysis using iodide/nitrite reaction

A very simple flow injection amperometric system for determination of iodide in potassium iodide oral solution has been developed. It is based on the reaction of iodide with sodium nitrite in sulfuric acid medium. The iodine formed is amperometrically monitored at +200 mV versus Ag/AgCl with a platinum disk electrode (d = 0.75 mm) adapted in the wall-jet cell. The flow system was used with gravitational pressure propulsion of reagents (carrier solution 2 x 10-4 mol L-1 NaNO2 and 0.2 mol L-1 H2SO4 ), and a flow rate of 4 mL/min. The method is rapid (up to 100 h-1) and precise (RSD = 1.9 %; for n=10 and C I 8 x 10-6 mol L-1 ) presenting a LD of 20 ng I- or 8 x 10-7 mol L-1 (3 SD). The validation of proposed methods was made by potentiometric titration with 0.100 mol L-1 AgNO3 (USP method) and the result obtained were agreement with the described by specification of the manufacturer.
