Education, interculturality and citizenship

The struggle between the own identity and that one which comes from diffuse transnational system, interrelated and interdependent seems to be the hallmark of the new Latin-American scenarios due to globalization. In this context of tensions, one of the great challenges of educational activities should be the creation of a citizenship as an area of participation, in such a way to reconcile cultural identity and diversity. That is, the school should promote an "interculturality citizenship" which is not another thing that a consonant citizenship with the pluralist democracy which includes the cultural diversity. It implies a mutual recognition of all the subjects of rights, capable of political participation which converges in public space as space of all on which gravitate the institutions of the democracy. One of the basic conditions of the intercultural education is that all the processes must be contextualized and developed together with all the stakeholders. Thus, the intercultural education should be reflected not only in those establishments with presence of diverse students of origins or sensibilities, but should become an indispensable necessity avoiding cultural homogenization. So, the great task of the younger generations should be learning to live not only in a changing technological world, but to be capable, at the same time, to support and renew our local cultures, as well as being critical of the beliefs and ways of being themselves.
