THE ANNUAL STUDENT COST OF THE 2,537 BRAZILIAN HEIS: THE FALL OF A MYTH?

ABSTRACT

This study presents a model for calculating the average student cost of the 2,537 Brazilian Higher Education Institutions, dividing them into public and private segments. The model uses information present in national databases, establishing premises to be considered in the calculation of financial resources and the number of students to be considered. Furthermore, a relationship is established between the cost and the presence of distance education in Higher Education Institutions, and the existence of a myth in Brazilian education is discussed, that of federal universities having higher average annual costs than private universities.
