Mediatization of the privatization processes of ─ and in ─ education in Latin America and the Caribbean: a study of media discourse

ABSTRACT:

The article provides some results of the investigation "Mediatization and privatization in Latin America" that was developed under the project "Privatization in Education Research Initiative (Open Education Society - Campaña Latinoamericana por el Derecho a la Educación)". We sought to recognize the discursive strategies of the hegemonic media to promote the privatization of education and alternative media strategies, which consider education as a human right. The methodology was developed based on discourse analysis and theory of Frame. The main results indicate that the central strategy of the hegemonic media is to characterize public education as negative and privatization and profit as positive. While alternative media is facing privatization, they recognize the State as a guarantor of Education and give voice to the actors who demand the fulfillment of rights.
