Espinosa and the ethical radicalization in public education

This work discusses a chapter of Transgressões Convergentes by João Wanderlei Geraldi, Maria Benites and Bernd Fichtener. The main problem tackled in this text is the "ethical radicalization in public education". The abovementioned chapter rescues three examples of innovative actions in education that give the students "the right to learn how to be a human being" and form a "personal commitment to the future". The modern Dutch philosopher Bento de Espinosa (1632-1677) had been evoked to clarify how such examples have developed into social practices. This paper thus shows that the ideas of that text are indeed associated to Espinosa's philosophy and that philosopher can increasingly contribute to an ethic radicalization in public education to which, in our opinion, two more adjectives should be added: democratic and lay.
