PROCESSES OF TURNING HISTORICAL MEMORY INTO HERITAGE. THE CASE OF TRAINEE TEACHERS

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research is to find out how the processes of turning the historical memory of the Spanish civil war and Franco’s regime into heritage are developed. For this purpose, 85 narratives of students of the Degree in Primary Education at the University of the Basque Country (Spain) were analysed by means of a progression hypothesis formed by 6 variables. The results indicate that attachment to heritage happens with memories related to wartime experiences, with whose protagonists they have affective ties. In addition, they do not confront these memories with the “official” narrative and choose material heritages for their remembrance. This provides clues for improving initial teacher training programmes in dealing with memories and heritages in conflict.
