Raymond Williams and the democratic education

ABSTRACT:

Taking a sociology of culture and cultural history from a combined perspective, to emphasize the English experience of adult education from the history of Raymond Williams and two institutions, Oxford University and the Workers’ Educational Association, this article will discuss how a pedagogical knowledge has been produced in the relationship between a tutor and his adult students in the context of the post-war period. To achieve this goal, the text is organized in two moments: first, making a general explanation about adult education as a political, intellectual and voluntary project linked to the defence of democracy in England; second, showing how Raymond Williams participated in that process, offering meaningful theoretical-practical contributions to the democratic education debate of the moment.
