A chapter in the history of education and the teaching profession in brazil: education institute of the federal district and its historiography

ABSTRACT:

This paper focuses the historiography of the Brazilian educational movement between 1920 and 1930, especially about the training for teaching. On one hand, it discusses the relevance of the Education Institute of Rio de Janeiro (ISERJ) to understand the period and the theme. It suggests that this institution was marked by the transformation in the education movement memory. On the other hand, it examines the meaning of the current discusses about the training for teaching to the interpretations on the ISERJ. Finally, the text reflects about a major change in how we respond to the challenge of training for teaching. The conclusion affirms the gap between an ennobling exclusionary, selective and elitist program of teacher preparation in the past and the current practices of disqualification of the teaching exercise.
