ABSTRACT:

The purpose of this article is to discuss the education for democracy, within the Brazilian Democratic Rule of Law, looking at the social philosophies of American pragmatist John Dewey and Jürgen Habermas, from the "second generation" of the Frankfurt School. This article uses the concept of discourse and of its rational, cognitive and moral learning potential to interpret the constitutional project of 1988, in which the education and the democracy, overcoming the authoritarian past of the country, can constitute inseparable communicative experiences in the realization of the modern emancipation project.
