This paper explores research - theses and dissertations - on the work and health of basic education teachers carried out between 1997 and 2006, in Brazil, to survey to which forms of sufering these professionals are submited. It shows that most studies on mental health draw on psychology and medical and biological sciences. They dialog with both the methodological, theoretical framework of work psychopathology and education studies on teachers' discontent. Finally, the text points out the limits and perspective of the research on the working conditions and health of teachers.
