Traditions and contradictions in the Brazilian postgraduate studies

The present essay discusses the Brazilian model of Masters Degree. Among several aspects, it focuses both on its dependence on scientific production and on the strong influence of the North American model on the structure of the Brazilian one. It then approaches the problem of incompatibility between the postgraduate degrees obtained in Brazil and in foreign institutions, and the issue of the rigidity of the Brazilian academic masters whose requirements are compatible with those of Doctor Degrees of some countries.
