Teaching work and quality: teachers' experiences and learning opportunities

This communication is part of a research project carried out in Portugal. Its main objective is to understand the impact of recent legislation - which aims at improving teachers' work quality - on aspects such as teachers' learning opportunities, the teaching career and the (re)construction of professional identity. In this text, we highlight some results of the analysis (performed with the help of the NVivo program version 9.0) of data obtained from oral and written narratives, discussion groups and an open-ended questionnaire given to 396 primary school teachers. The results reveal that the teaching work is compromised due to professional discontentment; discontentment resulting mostly from lack of recognition, mainly from their hierarchic superiors, which, in turn, has negative effects on the teachers' identity and their teaching practices.
