Leakage evaluation in a water supply network sector of Campo Grande-MS through inverse model

The increasing population of the cities requires an efficient water resources management, particularly when new supply source explorations are costly and natural resources are growing scarce. On the other hand, in several Brazilian cities, water distribution networks usually present a high percentage of water losses due to non-physical or physical losses (leakage). The present study seeks to evaluate the leakage of a water distribution network sector in the city of Campo Grande-MS. An iterative procedure for hydraulic analysis based both on leakage and on pressure-dependent demand has been used in conjunction with the hydraulic simulator EPANET 2 (Rossman, 2000). The calibration is conducted in terms of the parameters of the leakage model, as well as the head loss coefficients due to hydraulic components in the network. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have been used to solve the corresponding inverse problem.
