Reading comprehension and phonological awareness: Evidence of validity of their measures

This study searched for evidence of validity for measures that evaluate related constructs, namely, reading comprehension and phonological awareness. A total of 112 second- and fifth-grade children of both sexes between the ages of 6 and 12 years (M = 8,46; SD = 1,68) from a public elementary school in a town in São Paulo participated in the study. The students answered a cloze test, the Phonological awareness assessment and Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production, the last two being administered individually. The results confirmed the existence of criterion validity in contrasting groups, as the children who obtained high scores on the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production also showed significantly higher performance on the cloze test and the Phonological awareness assessment.
