Open-access Phenomenology and Psychology in Brazil: Historical aspects

Abstract

The Historiography of Philosophy traditionally indicates that Phenomenology arrived in Brazil in the 1940s, through discussions of Existentialism. However, it was in the field of Psychology that Phenomenology had its first publications in the Brazilian scenario. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief history of the arrival and consolidation of Phenomenology in Brazil, referring to its first authors, and tracing its roots in Psychology to pioneers Waclaw Radecki and Nilton Campos. We present the first references in Philosophy through Euryalo Cannabrava and Vicente Ferreira da Silva and also discuss the current scenario, shedding light to the latest developments in the area of Psychology, pinpointing their historical basis.
