INFLUENCE OF SODIUM SULPHITE AND SODIUM HYDROXIDE IN THE QUANTIFICATION OF THE TANNINS BARK FROM BARBATIMÃO (Stryphnodendron adstringens)

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this work was to verify the influence of sodium sulphite and sodium hydroxide at temperatures of 70ºC and 100 ºC during 3 and 4 hours, respectively, in the tannins production from barbatimão bark. Best results were observed using sodium sulphite to extract tannins from barbatimão bark when compared to sodium hydroxide and the best extraction condition was at 70 °C during three hours. Increasing the temperature of extraction and the time did not provide tannins yields increment but an increase in the extraction costs. Using sodium hydroxide at higher temperature the production of non-tannins substances was incresed.
