Storage of Parkia pendula (Willd.) Benth. ex Walp. (FABACEAE) seeds in different types of packaging and environments

Parkia pendula (Angelim-saia) is a natural tree in the Brazilian Amazonia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the germination behavior and physiological quality of its seeds. To this end, seeds were stored in packages of different permeability: aluminum, plastic and paper bags. They were then stored for six months in two environments: in a refrigerated chamber and under natural environment. The following attributes were assessed: water content; germination percentage; mean emergence time of the roots and seedlings; length and dry matter of seedlings after two, four and six months; and seedling production at the beginning and end of the storage period. The seeds remained viable and presented high quality after six months of storage. For the storage of seeds in refrigerated chamber, packaging in plastic and paper bags is recommended. Under natural environment, it is possible to use the three types of packaging. Seeds stored in refrigerated chamber for six months produced seedlings of better quality with respect to the height:diameter ratio of the stem for seeds stored in plastic and aluminum bags.
