The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of irrigation method and substrate coverage on the initial growth and quality of Myracrodruon urundeuva seedlings. We tested three different irrigation methods and four types of substrate coverage. The response variables were total height, diameter at the base of the stem, number of leaves, Dickson quality index, and survival. The use of a water depth of 12 mm once daily, administered in the morning, was the best irrigation option for the production of 'aroeira' seedlings. Carbonized rice chaff as substrate coverage provided better quality standard to the seedlings, while sand should not be used for this purpose.
