This research deals with lignin formation in plants cultivated under altered oxygen atmosphere conditions. This experiment was carried out with Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam in appropriated culture medium. Klason lignin was prepared from stem and leaf of plants. Infrared spectra showed that plants grown in altered oxygen condition produced lignin with different structural profile compared with blank samples. Estimated lignin content from plants grown under oxygen (0.1 kg/cm2 - O2) was approximately 14.4mg/596.8 mg of dried plants tissues, while standard samples showed 5.3mg. Extractive content (acetone extraction) from plants grown under altered oxygen condition (0.1 kg/cm2 - O2) was approximately 0.9495 mg/596.3 mg of dried plants tissue, while standard samples showed 0.9317 mg.
