The impossibility of containing: urban interventions and subjectivity production in Porto Alegre

Abstract

By wandering through the city of Porto Alegre, the researcher explores different urban interventions and their effects on the processes of subjectivation. From exploring the implementation of garbage containers to different art forms that are present in the city, the researcher builds a narrative about the forces that compose the city based on the effects of such interventions in the urban space. In this cartography, garbage and art are invited to respond to the need of asepsis, to correspond to beauty standards, to order bodies, to gentrify and revitalize precarious spaces and to interfere directly with the ways of living in the city. At the same time, the interventions also capture murmurs and denunciations of the city, create deviations in the urban flows, offering collective experiences. Besides that, they proposes new life styles that crossed by street encounters, ephemeral details, subversive art and other possible times and movements in the chaos that gives shape to the urban space.
