This study analyzes the cooperation set up in Barbacena municipality, Minas Gerais state, between a public authority and a third sector institution for building and managing assisted living residences as part of a deinstitutionalization strategy within the overall context of psychiatry reform in Brazil. It shows that this experiment is part of a trend towards innovative health care management, and indicates a will to preserve the principles of psychiatric reform.
