Resumo Desde a época moderna, em Portugal, a assistência à doença foi prestada, sobretudo, pelos hospitais, muitos deles criados pelas Misericórdias. No entanto, a criação de novos hospitais no século XIX e nas primeiras décadas do século XX não trouxe, necessariamente, uma melhoria no tratamento dos doentes, visto que, salvo raras exceções, eram espaços pequenos, mal equipados e carentes de recursos humanos e materiais. O objetivo deste texto é apresentar uma reflexão sobre a resposta hospitalar em Portugal entre 1834 e as primeiras décadas do século XX. Pretendemos apontar as mudanças e continuidades que, nesse período, ocorreram no campo da assistência à doença, fazendo referência à criação de diversas instituições.

Abstract Since the modern era, healthcare in Portugal has been provided primarily by hospitals, many of which were founded by the Sisters of Mercy and known as Misericordias. However, the creation of new hospitals in the nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century did not necessarily yield improved patient care, since these institutions tended to be small, poorly equipped, and lacking in human and material resources. This study presents a reflection on developments in Portuguese hospitals from 1834 through to the first decades of the twentieth century, drawing on data on several institutions to identify changes and continuities in the healthcare offered.

Resumo O artigo baseia-se na historiografia recente das relações internacionais e da saúde global, bem como em arquivos selecionados, para propor alguns marcos para uma história da governança hospitalar global do final do século XIX a meados do século XX. Como podemos identificar um sistema de governança hospitalar, incluindo acordos formais e informais, em escala global ou subglobal? Por meio das lentes da International Hospital Association, fundada em 1931, destacamos a importância dos processos de internacionalização, das relações com outras organizações internacionais, das redes interpessoais transnacionais e das forças que estruturam a inovação. Esse documento fornece um ponto de partida preliminar para a discussão e incentiva pesquisas adicionais.

Abstract This article draws on the recent historiography in international relations and global health, as well as selected archives, to propose some milestones for a history of global hospital governance from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. How can we identify a system of hospital governance, including formal and informal arrangements, on a global or sub-global scale? Through the lens of the International Hospital Association, founded in 1931, we highlight the significance of internationalization processes, relationships with other international organizations, transnational interpersonal networks, and forces structuring innovation. This document provides a preliminary starting point for discussion and encourages further research.

Resumo O estudo analisa a influência dos hospitais na especialização médica e as implicações resultantes para a história da saúde pública de 1880 a 1933, com foco em Lisboa como um estudo de caso. Após o terremoto de 1755, ocorreu uma mudança dos hospitais de estilo renascentista para uma rede de hospitais que ocupava estrategicamente diversos espaços urbanos, moldando significativamente a modernização da medicina e as políticas governamentais de saúde. Empregando a estrutura dos estudos de história da ciência, tecnologia e medicina, a pesquisa enriquece a historiografia dos hospitais, oferecendo uma visão abrangente de sua importância social durante o período estudado.

Abstract This study analyzes the influence of hospitals on medical specialization and resulting implications for the history of public health from 1880 to 1933, with a focus on Lisbon as a case study. After the 1755 earthquake, a shift occurred from Renaissance-style hospitals to a network of hospitals that strategically occupied diverse urban spaces, significantly shaping the modernization of medicine and governmental healthcare policies. Employing the framework of the history of science, technology and medicine studies, this research enriches the historiography of hospitals, offering comprehensive insight into their societal significance during the study period.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar a relevância da teoria miasmática para a construção e a organização espacial do Hospital Geral de Santo Antônio, no Porto, Portugal, no século XIX, sob o ponto de vista dos médicos recém-formados. A metodologia consistirá na análise das dissertações inaugurais apresentadas à Escola Médico-Cirúrgica do Porto, a fim de avaliar as percepções dos médicos sobre a construção do Hospital de Santo António, com ênfase na relação entre saúde, medicina e meio. O trabalho pretende contribuir para uma melhor compreensão da relação entre a abordagem teórica referencial da doença e a prática médica, na interface da saúde, da medicina e do ambiente ao analisar encontros interspécies.

Abstract The aim of this work is to ascertain the relevance of the miasmatic theory for the construction and spatial organization of the Hospital Geral de Santo António in Porto, Portugal, in the 19th century, from then recent graduate physicians’ viewpoint. The methodology consists of analyzing the inaugural dissertations presented to the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica do Porto in order to assess the physicians’ perceptions of the Santo António Hospital building, with emphasis on the relationship between health, medicine and environment. This work intends to contribute to better understand the relationship between the theoretical referential approach to disease and medical practice, at the interface of health, medicine, and environment by analyzing interspecies encounters.

Resumo Em 2020 o mundo vivenciou o flagelo da covid-19. A Fiocruz se viu novamente diante de um grande desafio. Uma das estratégias estabelecidas pela instituição para o enfrentamento da doença foi a construção de um novo hospital. Não era a primeira vez que a Fiocruz construía um espaço de assistência hospitalar. O primeiro hospital, cujas instalações necessitam de ações de preservação, foi aberto em 1918 para estudos e tratamento de doenças tropicais. O segundo foi erguido em 2021, especialmente para tratar as vítimas da nova epidemia, na lógica de um hospital de campanha. Esse artigo pretende trazer reflexões para se entender o contexto de construção de ambos os hospitais, bem como contribuir para estudos sobre história das ciências e da saúde.

Abstract In 2020 the world suffered from covid-19. Fundação Oswaldo Cruz faced itself again with a challenging task. One of its strategies while battling the disease was building a hospital. It was not the first time the institution would build such a healthcare facility. The first hospital, which nowadays needs preservation measures, opened in 1918 intending to study and treat tropical diseases. The second, built in 2021, was a field hospital designed to treat the new epidemic victims. This article aims to reflect upon both hospitals’ construction contexts, as well as contribute to studies on the history of science and health.

Resumo O conceito de pharmakon abrange a ambivalência paradoxal dos efeitos nocivos e benéficos de qualquer intervenção terapêutica. No contexto das práticas imunológicas relacionadas à covid-19, essa ambivalência tem sido explorada com sucesso pelo movimento antivacina e também é evidente na hesitação vacinal generalizada em países ricos, onde vacinas contra essa doença estão amplamente disponíveis. Aqui, examinamos o aparato teórico do pharmakon para verificar como o cuidado, o dano, o risco e a prevenção são implementados nas medidas de prevenção da covid-19 e mobilizamos metodologias transdisciplinares dos estudos de ciência e tecnologia para investigar como imaginários antecipatórios impulsionam a pesquisa de ponta sobre as vacinas contra a covid-19 e as práticas clínicas e sociais que elas suscitaram.

Abstract The concept of pharmakon encapsulates the paradoxical ambivalence of any therapeutic intervention’s harmful as well as beneficial effects; within the context of immunological practices related to covid-19, this ambivalence has been successfully exploited by anti-vaccination movements and is also evident in widespread vaccine hesitancy in wealthy countries where vaccines for this virus are widely available. Here we engage with the theoretical apparatus of the pharmakon to examine how care, harm, risk, and prevention are enacted in covid-19 prevention measures and mobilize the transdisciplinary methodologies of science and technology studies to investigate how anticipatory imaginaries drive cutting-edge research on covid-19 vaccines and the clinical and social practices they have elicited.

Resumo Este trabalho pretende ilustrar o panorama da saúde e da medicina em Portugal no primeiro quartel do século XX a partir do espólio fotográfico de Jorge Marçal da Silva, médico e fotógrafo amador, que tem sido preservado pela família. Da sua coleção, escolhemos uma seleção de fotografias que ilustram o modus vivendi da população portuguesa, no interior rural, no litoral piscatório e na vida citadina, bem como algumas das que retratam os ambientes hospitalares e a assistência médica na capital, no sentido de reflectir sobre a sua importância como fonte de reflexão historiográfica para a história da medicina portuguesa de Novecentos.

Abstract This paper aims at illustrating the panorama of health and medicine in Portugal in the first quarter of the twentieth century using the photographic collection of Jorge Marçal da Silva, a doctor and amateur photographer, which has been preserved by his family. From his collection, we have chosen a selection of photographs that illustrate the modus vivendi of the Portuguese population, in the rural interior, on the fishing coast and in city life, as well as some that depict hospital environments and medical care in the capital, in order to reflect on their importance as a source for the historiographical reflection on the history of Portuguese medicine in the 1900s.
