Abstract
The paper aims to analyze the reading practices in the Centro Psychico de Caetité, Bahia State, in the first decades of the 20th century. The main sources used in the research - minutes, letters, cards, spirit manifestation books - can be found in the institution's archive. The Center maintained intense practice of reading / listening of multiple objects in its daily activities, revealing that the act of reading played an active role in the construction of the identity of the “spiritist self”. Such reading occurred collectively, orally, gestualized, mediated and controlled.
