Abstract
This study investigates the role of the Jesuits in the policy for the natives of the lands of Brazil, ordered by King Dom João III, which is included in the Regiment of Tomé de Souza. It analyzes the manuscript of the Rules which is located in Codex 112 of the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU) at Lisbon. It also analyzes, in Jesuit letters, the attempt to implement the policy by the clergy of the Society of Jesus and the confrontation with local culture. Michel Foucault's studies are used for the analysis of the documents on the transition from sovereign power to disciplinary power and the genesis of pastoral power.
